Student accommodation in Malta: how to find housing before you arrive

Accommodation is often the first major concern for international students planning to study in Malta. The good news: Malta is a small, well-connected island with a well-established rental market used to welcoming international students, workers, and residents.
The most common and cost-effective option. Most students rent a room in a shared apartment — typically a 2-to-4-bedroom flat shared with other students or young professionals. Expect to pay €350–€550/month for a furnished room with bills. The most popular areas:
Sliema and St Julian's — central, close to language schools and nightlife, but more expensive (€450–€550/room).
Valletta — historic capital, close to university and services (€380–€500).
Birkirkara, Mosta, Naxxar — quieter, more residential, lower cost (€320–€420), well connected by bus.
Some Maltese educational institutions offer student halls or have partnerships with private student accommodation providers. These are typically fully-furnished, all-bills-included, and managed — useful for your first arrival. They tend to cost €500–€700/month for a private room. Check with your institution before accepting a place; availability is limited.
Popular local property sites include Malta Park and Facebook groups such as "Malta Rooms for Rent" and "Malta Accommodation for Students." Always:
— View the property (via video call if remote) before paying anything.
— Confirm that utilities (electricity, water, internet) are included or understand what they cost separately.
— Get a signed rental agreement, even for informal shared flats.
— Check proximity to your school or university campus.
If you prefer to find your long-term accommodation after you arrive and get a feel for the island, Malta has excellent short-stay apartment options (Airbnb, Booking.com) and budget-friendly guesthouses. A week's short stay costs approximately €200–€350 and gives you time to view properties in person before committing.
