Malta student visa requirements: who needs one and how to apply

Whether you need a student visa depends on your nationality. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals can study in Malta without a visa — they have the right to live, study, and work freely within EU member states.
Non-EU nationals — including students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East — require a Type D (National) Long-Stay Visa and, once in Malta, must apply for a Residence Permit to remain legally.
1. Valid passport — valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
2. Confirmation of enrolment — a letter from your Maltese school or university confirming your place on an accredited programme.
3. Proof of sufficient funds — bank statements showing you can cover tuition and living costs (typically at least €6,000–€8,000).
4. Proof of accommodation — a rental agreement or housing letter confirming your address in Malta.
5. Travel health insurance — valid for the duration of your stay.
6. Criminal record clearance — from your country of residence, usually required for stays over 90 days.
7. Passport photos — typically 2 recent biometric photos.
You apply for the Malta Type D visa at the Maltese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Processing times typically take 15–30 working days. Apply early — do not wait until after you receive your enrolment confirmation.
After entering Malta on your visa, you must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival through Identità (Malta's national identity authority). The permit is typically valid for one year and renewable annually as long as you remain enrolled.
International students in Malta are legally permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during academic breaks. This is a significant benefit for students who want to gain work experience and offset living costs.
