What does it actually cost to live in Malta as a student?

Malta is not the cheapest destination in Europe, but it is significantly more affordable than the UK, Ireland, Germany, or the Netherlands — especially when you factor in the English-language environment and EU degree recognition. Most international students budget between €700 and €1,100 per month covering rent, food, transport, and personal expenses.

Accommodation: your biggest cost

Rent is your largest monthly outgoing. Private studio apartments in or near Valletta, Sliema, or St Julian's typically cost €650–€950/month. Shared apartments — the most popular option among students — range from €350–€550 per person per month depending on location and room size.

Towns slightly outside the main tourist belt (Birkirkara, Mosta, Naxxar) are notably cheaper. Many students pay under €400 for a shared room in these areas and commute easily by bus.

Food and groceries

Malta has a good mix of supermarkets including LIDL, which is very affordable. A realistic food budget for a student who mostly cooks at home is €150–€200/month. Eating out at local restaurants costs around €8–€14 for a main course; cafés and street food are cheaper still.

Transport

Malta has no train network but a reliable, affordable bus system covering the whole island. Bus is free for students enrolled at accredited institutions in Malta — a Tallinja card is issued on registration. Most students find this sufficient for daily commuting. Cycling is also growing in popularity, especially in flatter northern areas.

Sample monthly student budget

Shared apartment rent: €420
Food and groceries: €180
Transport (bus): Free (Tallinja student card)
Phone and internet: €20
Leisure and personal: €80
Total: approximately €726/month

Students who work part-time (up to 20 hours/week is legally permitted on a student visa) can offset a significant portion of these costs. Outreach Recruitment Agency Malta actively connects students with part-time placements suited to their schedule and field of study.

Is Malta good value compared to other EU countries?

A comparable lifestyle in Dublin, Amsterdam, or Munich would cost 60–90% more. Malta gives you English-medium education, an EU-recognised degree, a warm Mediterranean climate, and a safe environment — at a price point that leaves room to breathe financially.
